Welcome To Mettawa

Mayor Casey UrlacherWe invite you to browse our website to learn more about our beautiful community—a hidden gem in Lake County. Our residents enjoy the best of both worlds—living within long stretches of woods and forests preserves—not a building in sight, yet with quick access to the tollway and a variety of shopping only minutes away. O'hare Airport is a 30 minute drive and Chicago can be reached in less than an hour!

If you don't already know, you may be interested to learn that our unique Village is named after a famous Pottawatomi Native Indian Chief who befriended the very first white settler in Lake County. Then, as now, Mettawa (pronounced: Ma-Tao-Wa) is a community that holds the land dear to its heart. (click here for more history)

As a small, but thriving community of families and businesses, we share a concern for the environment and its sustainability and understand that we are just temporary stewards of the land...to be handed over to future generations, hopefully in as good, if not better condition. Our citizens enjoy living in Mettawa for a variety of reasons, but we all share a common love of wide-open spaces and the rural lifestyles that open lands allow! In fact, at one time Mettawa had more horses than people; a place where fox hunts and family rides across open savannas established a casual and sociable environment that still exists today.

Ours is a community of large home lots with plenty of space to enjoy a variety of outdoor activities from showing dogs and horses to organic gardening and beekeeping.Mayor Casey Urlacher The Village has installed a trail network that allows residents to connect to five nearby forest preserves so residents can enjoy horseback riding, running, biking, sledding, walking, and playing with their children or grandchildren!

As Mayor, I am committed to maintaining this quality of life by delivering superior services, safeguarding the sustainability of our land, and ensuring that Mettawa continues to be a desirable, safe community in which to live, work, raise a family, shop, and participate in recreational activities.

Finally, our Village Government is resident-friendly and focused on providing the best living environment possible by making long-lasting decisions that increase the value of our homes. If you have any questions after touring our website, please call Sandy Gallo, Village Clerk, at 847-573-1460 or contact us by clicking here.

We hope you will visit Mettawa soon!
